The Modern Idea of Marriage

'The Modern idea of marriage as being mainly about love and companionship only emerged in the last couple of centuries' states Alex Gendler in his TED-ed video The History of Marriage.

He also states that 'Marriage has always been shaped by society and as societies' structure, values and goals change over time, its ideas of marriage will continue to change along with them.'

Since this is true...  I do not understand what marriage is all about.
We grow up in societies expecting us to get married and have children. Eventually this will make us successful citizens of the world.

And I get it, there is a small percentage of happily married people who are team-players, grow together and manage to make this work.

But still...
In a society full of choices, where people (supposedly) get married to the ones they choose (can I ambitiously say the love of their lives?)

Why do so many married people flirt with others?
Why do so many married people cheat on their spouses?
Why do so many married people not wear their wedding rings?
Why do so many people get married if they really do not want to?
Is ticking the boxes, in the checklist constructed by society, what really matters?
