Why do you dislike opera?
Have you ever been to one?
If not, how can you be so opinionated? Do you dislike a certain type of food without even trying it?
In order to give a better understanding of this art form, (and make it more fun) here are some myths debunked:
Myth 1: The Fat Lady Screaming
Unless you are thinking of Wagnerian Operas, opera singers nowadays are slim. Google search some big names and you will see that the majority are of a normal weight.
Myth 2: This is Not a Proper Job
Did you know that opera singers hold a Bachelors Degree, a Masters degree, another Masters and a Post-Postgraduate degree in singing and drama?
This is an expensive, very competitive business with perfectionist demands. Often, not a stable job, but with so many degrees, I am sure they can still make a living, don't you think?
Myth 3: Opera is for the Elite
Historically speaking, there is some truth in this.
Opera originated as the entertainment of the elite and was the development of the ancient Greek Tragedy. Later on however, it became the pop music of the time and people would go to opera houses to drink and sing along with the singers on stage.
Nowadays, opera has become a vary serious art form, however, companies put on productions of top quality offering tickets as cheap as £10.
No excuses then...
Myth 4: I Don't Understand the Language
Even if the opera is sung in your native language, some words might be difficult to understand. However, opera singers' training includes diction and when on stage they put a lot of work in communicating the language as effectively as possible.
In additions, opera companies offer surtitles with the translated text so that everyone is be able to understand what is been sung on stage.
If you have never been to an opera but still insist that you do not like it, then I have no intention to discuss your reasons why. Like scientific research... without evidence, it does not exist.
Whether you adore or detest opera, I understand your point of view as long as you have attended a performance.
But if you have never attended one, in an opera house with professional singers, full costumed and full orchestra, what are you waiting for?
Get booking tickets, get to know this art form, read about it and above all... Enjoy it! :)
A little tip: Some Mozart will be a good starting point! Funny plots with beautiful Music!

I had no idea opera tickets could be purchased so inexpensively. I've never been to one in part because I assumed it was something only wealthy people could afford. Fascinating.
