New York City

The Big Apple, a nickname given to New York City in the 1920's.
Do you know why?

Well, horse racing was very popular at that time and the trophies given were apples.
When a journalist overheard two people saying that they are going to the Big Apple,
he used this phrase in his article.
In the 1930's jazz musicians use it in their music and eventually in the 1970's a campaign commenced to promote New York while using the exact phrase
 'The Big Apple'.
