How did we come to celebrate Valentine’s day?
According to History Channel’s article: History of Valentine’s day, the Catholic Church only recognizes Valentine as a saint. Then again, there are
more than one saints to be celebrated.
One legend states that, in the 3rd century St. Valentine was a priest that continued to
perform weddings even when emperor Claudius II forbid them. The emperor
believed that men were better soldiers when not married and without children.
Another legend states that St. Valentine might have been
killed trying to help Christians escape Roman prisons. One of the prisoners
however, fell in love with a girl (his inmate’s daughter) and sent her a love letter
signed with the infamous phrase ‘From your Valentine’.
However, there are some ‘plainer’ legends…
It is believed that Valentine’s day is celebrated on the 14th
of February in an attempt of the Catholic church to ‘Christianize’ Lupercalia – a festival dedicated to the Roman God, Faunus, celebrating
fertility on the 15th of February.
And even though this is a tradition mostly celebrated in the
Catholic Church, in the recent years it has become a global business that
produces loads of profit.
According to statistics gathered by History channel, on Valentine’s
day 220 million roses are produced, 448
million deserts are bought in the weeks presiding, 36 million heart shaped
boxes are sold, 150 million cards are sent annually and in average 6 million
couples are getting engaged on that day.
How do YOU feel on Valentine’s day?
Are you in love?
Are you celebrating?
Does it make you feel lonely?
Does it make you feel lonely?
What if Valentine ’s Day is just a mindset?
Why do you have to receive a rose, a present or a box of
chocolate, especially on that day?
Why do you have to feel insecure for being single?
Do you know the infamous 'cliché' married couples use when
talking about Valentine’s day?
They say:
They say:
‘Why do we have to celebrate being in love only on Valentine
’s Day? We celebrate it every day!'
Valentine’s day is just a mindset, a celebration
constructed by society.
Both, an acknowledgement for being in love and a beautiful
reminder of what being in love feels like.
You cannot run away from falling in love. It is not a
choice. It just happens.
What really matters however, is being in love with the right person and all the feelings and emotions that come with it! 😊
Happy Valentine's Day!
