Emotional Intelligence, is the ability to master your emotions and that of others (see blog: What is Emotional Intelligence).
In her Tedx talk Six Steps To Improve Emotional Intelligence, Ramona Hacker lists the ways by which we can improve our emotional intelligence.
She states that emotional awareness and empathy towards ourselves and others is essential. It helps us harness our emotions, apply them to tasks, manage and regulate them.
She also emphasizes the fact that people that bully or judge others, do so because of their insecurity. They cannot understand the difference between their emotions and that of others as a result behaving in such a way.
She concludes by stating that if we all learn to practice emotional intelligence, our relationships and mental health will be better therefore creating a truly inclusive world.
However, being the devils advocate, it is worthwhile mentioning that emotional intelligence can benefit society in many ways but can also manipulate it.
When one has the power to understand others emotions, he/she can also manipulate them.
When I asked my trainer in an Erasmus+ training course (Level Up), about emotional intelligence and if this can be manipulative, she responded that if people use it to manipulate others, then it cannot be considered as 'Intelligence'.
I understand where she is coming from, but it is no use educating society about emotional intelligence and not mentioning the disadvantages that come with it too.
It is better to see both signs of a coin so that you can influence society positively but also be alert that no everyone will use the 'intelligent' part of it.
