Why Do We Not Listen?

Everyone in the class sat in a circle, ready to discuss their thoughts of the lesson. Some children suggested that support, respect, encouragement and being team players were vital to the class.

As the discussion progressed, one of the boys (a refugee) asked if he could express his thoughts about something not relevant to our topic.

The leader of the group allowed him to do so, and what came out of an 11 year old boy shook us to the bone.

He said: ‘ I am afraid because there is a war happening in my country. I am terrified that the people occupying my country, will come here and take everything from us like last time.’

The whole class stood still.

When you listen to all these stories in the news, you do not realize how much it affects others, until you somehow come in direct contact with people affected by these situations.

We reassured the boy, that he is safe with us, however, so many questions crossed my mind.

Since WE are the adults...
  • Why are there children around the world suffering?
  • Why are there children around the world starving?
  • Why are there unaccompanied minors living in foreign countries?
  • Why are there children not getting the education they should?
  • Why do we not listen?
  • Why do we not change?
WE are supposed to provide a better future for them...
but what I realized that afternoon, was that as a society, we are still failing...
