Why is it so quiet when it snows?
According to Science Daily, professor David Herrin, supports that snow has the great ability to absorb sound. There is plenty of space between snowflakes, therefore less space for sound waves to travel.

'I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up, snug, you know, with a white quilt; ad perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again." - Lewis Caroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass.
