Below you can find a couple of interesting facts about Beethoven:
According to Gustav Mahler, Beethoven enjoyed walking around Vienna's countryside in order to get inspired. These where the places were he had his best musical ideas. It must have been a strange sight for the locals to watch Beethoven walkng around, hummying tunes and conducting invisible orchestras. They weren't aware that Beethoven's mind was full of music. In fact, in his long walks he always carried with him a small notebook in order to write down his musical ideas. (Auf deb spuren von Ludwig van Beethoven - 14von 15/ Gustav Mahler)
Beethoven - like Schubert- composed songs. He composed a funny song about a flea in the words of the famous poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The song talks about a flea that the king loves very much! He allows no one in his court to scratch themselves so that they don't hurt the flea.
Beethoven initianlly dedicated his 3rd symphony 'The Eroica' to Napoleon Buonaprte but later changed his mind, after Napoleon proclaimed himself Emperor of France in 1804. Bethoveen then scratched Napoleon's name from his manuscript so hard that the page was torn. Below you can see the copy of the original manuscript:
