Emma by Jane Austen

Jane Austen's decription of her heroine, Emma, triggers your curiosity from the very beggining. She stated: ' I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like'

Whether you agree or disagree whith this statement you cannot deny the magnificent and unexpected plot twists building up as you read along as well as the way Austen is able to speak to every one of us today.

Here are some quotes taken from the book:

'I have none of the usual inducements of women to marry. Were I fall in love, indeed, it would be a different thing!'

'Why she did not like Jane Fairfax might be a difficult question to answer; Mr Knightley had once told her it was because she saw in her the really accomplished yound woman which she wanted to be thought herself'

'A single woman, of good fortune, is always respectable and pleasant as anybody else'

'I do not think I could live without something of a musical society. I condition of nothing else; but without music, life would be a blank to me.'

'I lay it down as a general rule, Harriet, that if a woman doubts as to whether she should accept a man or not, she certainly ought to refuse him. If she can hesitate as to 'Yes', she ought to say 'No' directly.'
