Fear of Failure

We are all humans and we all make mistakes.

Some of us have the courage to admit them, own them and take responsibility, others try to avoid and lie about them.

Why do we act like that though? Why are we so afraid of making mistakes and failing?

According to M.D. Dimitrios Tsatiris in his article "5 Though Patterns that Fuel the Fear of Failure", states that the reasons why we are so afraid of failing are:

  • We take failure personally and we forget that it is part of our human experience.
  • We tend to magnify the consequences of our failure.
  • We believe that there is no benefit in our failure.
  • We feel ashamed when failing.
  • We avoid taking action when we believe we are failing.
How do you overcome your fear of failure though?
According to Ph.D. Theo Tsaousides' article "How to Conquer Fear of Failure", the way to overcome your fear of failure is to:
  • Think of failure as a discrepancy
  • Try to figure out which ones are the real or the imagined threads you might face.
  • Create a positive outcome of your failure i.e. 'I want to find a better job' and not ' I don't want to lose my job'.
  • Expect a good result from your goal but do not get to attached to it.
  • You will overcome your failure and you will be ok.
Failure, no matter how significant or insignificant it might seem, it always bothers us.
The most painful part of it however, is knowing that when failing, you might have disappointed the people that believed in you.
The best way to make it up them, is by admitting your failure, facing it on your own, owning it and growing through the process.

The right people will always be around, silently supporting and guiding you through your failures and success!
