Written in 2018, the blog 'Can You Define What Bullying is?' discussed how adults are responsible in teaching children what bullying is and how they should act when faced with it.
Almost 4 years later, this blog will discuss bullying experienced by adults being mobbed at work.
"Workplace mobbing is the purposeful humiliation, degradation, and terrorization of an individual by a group of people in an effort to remove them from the organization, often resulting in reputational damage, traumatization, health consequences, financial hardship, and job loss for the victim" (Are you Being Mobbed at Work?)
Why do bullies have the need to 'destroy' people?
- They lack emotional control and empathy. They are willing to harm others in order to get what they want.
- They use their emotional power in order to play on people's fears and make them believe things that are untrue.
- They tell false stories that are simply and easily believed by others, in order to support them against the victim. (Why Bullies Win)
How do you debate Bullies?
- It has nothing to do with you. It is about them and do not take it personally,
- Do not engage in a confrontation with them. The more you react, the more they will be aggressive towards you.
- Provide objective information in order to shift their perspective.
- Ask questions and look interested in what they are saying.
- Reflect and point out their behaviour to them. (5 Tips for Debating High Conflict People)
The most important thing to remember is that bullying should not be tolerated.
According to JD Bill Eddy LCSW in his article 'Why Bullies Win' states that bullies must be stopped by someone or something since they cannot do it themselves. This behaviour is 'embedded in their personalities' therefore they can't stop themselves. Their actions give them tremendous power of intimidation and they love it.
If you ever happen to come across a bully, be prepared, be strong and take action. Admit your mistakes and support your case with proof. Their behaviour should not be tolerated and they should be accountable for their actions. Destroying people only shows how mentally unhealthy they are.
You deserve better and they should understand that they cannot mess with you!
