Narcissists desire to be admired and praised by their potential partners, therefore they portray charismatic and charming characteristics. Their lack of empathy however results in them not being able to fully understand the other person's inner world. As a consequence they are unable to establish a long-term fulfilling relationship. They often establish rules in their relationships in order to control their partner and often isolate them from friends and family (Narcissism).
Most of their relationships are one way, transactional relationships. They seek to enjoy uncommitted pleasure and they tend to lose interest once intimacy increases in their relationships or feel that they have conquered the aim of their desire (Narcissism).
Narcissistic traits are considered by many not to be able to build a long term fulfilling relationship because of their egotistical ways. They prefer relationships that can somehow offer them what they need i.e. status, financial stability, attention, devotion or sexual fulfilment. Their relationships can be self-serving and one-sided. Their lack of emotional connection results in on/off relationships with numerous fights and arguments until a new opportunity comes along. In the cases where a relationship with a narcissist lasts for many years, the "outward picture is by no means a true representation of what goes on behind closed doors" (The Narcissistic Control of Relationships)
"Narcissists cannot be left; they can only leave" (The Narcissistic Control of Relationships)
