What is a Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

According to Julie L. Hall's article in Psychology Today "Anatomy of a Narcissist

"A narcissistic personality disorder is a mental illness rooted in identity and self esteem instability".

There are two types of narcissistic personality disorder:

  1. Grandiose (or overt) - characterized by extroversion, attention seeking, self-confidence and aggression. 
  2. Vulnerable (or covert) - characterized by introversion, negative emotions, high sensitivity and a need for constant reassurance. 
In addition associations with anxiety disorder, mood and substance abuse are also evident to the narcissistic personality disorder. 

What are the causes for a Narcissistic Personality Disorder?

The causes for a narcissistic personality disorder are not yet well understood. However, researches suggest that there are environmental and biological factors that play a role in its formation. In addition, researchers believe that according to genetic factors, early life experiences influence the disorder i.e. parenting style, cultural and social environments. Research also indigates that narcissistic traits start to form at the age of 8, where children start developing their sense of self.
