A Brief History of Greek Opera


1825 - After 400 years under the Turkish occupation, the Greek people were able to come in contact with the Western Music via Philharmonic Orchestras and foreign musicians. Until then, the only musical influences the Greeks had, were Byzantine Chant and Folk Songs.

1834 - Athens is established as the capital of Greece. Italian Opera companies start visiting Athens.

1839 - According to various statistics, 100 performances of foreign Opera Companies took place in Athens, sponsored by the state and their primary role was to entertain the German Upper Class.

1840 -  Performances of the opera "Lucia di lammermour" begin at the theater of the Italian Basilio Sansoni, 

1937 - The first act of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" is premiered in Athens.

** The Greek people wished to be inspired by the Western influences, however, there were many Greeks that were against it ***

1863 - The Ionian Islands (influenced by the development of Western Music) were unified with Greece.

1871 - The Athens conservatorium is established.

1888 - The first opera, written by Greek Composer and librettist Spyridonas Xyntha  and performed with only Greek singers and artists, was premiered at Mpoukoura Theater. 

1888 - Karayianni's opera company is established at the "New Theater of Athens" at the 19th of December, and toured in Aleksandria, Cairo, Constantinouple and Smyrna. 

1889 - Pavlos Carrer's operas "Markos Botsaris" and "Kyra Frosini" are performed under the composer's baton.

1900 - "La Boheme" by Giacomo Puccini is performed in Athens under the baton of Spinelli.

1910 - The Greek opera company tours in Greece with works such as Rigoletto etc.

1913 - The Greek opera company has a new sponsor and performs operas such us Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca" , Giuseppe Verdi's "Ernari" and many more.

1916 - The thater "Olympia" opens in Athens and inaugurates its opening with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's "Ernani". In that performance Maria Calla's vocal coach "Elvira De Hildalgo" participates as well.

1914-1918 - The Balkan Wars influenced the operatic world. 

1939 - Kostis Batsias, Director of  Letters and Arts at the Ministry of Education, through his actions and collaboration of the Greek Prime Minister Ioanni Metaxa, the Greek National Opera is formed.

1940 - The Greek National Opera is established and is under the direction of the Royal Theater. The operetta which inaugurated its operation was Johann Strauss "Die Fledermaus".

1944 -  The Greek National Opera is an independent organisation.
