What is Psychotherapy?

According to Psychology Today's article "What is Therapy", Psychotherapy is therapy aimed at mental health. The trained professionals that mainly offer psychotherapy are psychologists and psychiatrists, while at times there are other professions involved, such as social workers, councellors etc.

The structure followed during the therapeutically process, is that of scheduled sessions/meetings in which the therapist along with the patient work through several aspects of the patients life, with the only aim to improve them.  


Should one go into therapy?

According to Psychology Today's article "The Decision to Begin Therapy" everyone can benefit from therapy, even if they are not diagnosed with any illness. Even in instances where one feels anxious, has negative emotions, struggling with different relationships etc. they can benefit from therapy as it will structure the emotions, thoughts and events that are bothering them.


If one decides to go to therapy, how do one finds a therapist?

When trying to find a therapist, search for qualified therapists in your area. Attend a session with the therapist of your choice but in case you feel that the therapist is not for you, you can search for another therapist that you feel you can communicate with. According to Psychology Today's article "How to Find a Therapist" , the most important thing when choosing a therapist is communication and if the patient and therapist can "make a good team".


Is therapy expensive?

Like any form of therapy, psychotherapy can be expensive. However, there are several options that can contribute to an affordable therapy procedure either through your country's health system or by just choosing to see your therapist twice or once a month. 


How long does therapy last for?

According to Psychology Today's article "Ending Therapy" there is not a specific duration for therapy sessions. Usually therapy ends when the goals set in the beginning of the therapeutic session have been accomplished. Both patient and therapist can decide to end the therapeutic process.
