The aria "Ach, ich fühl's" which translates to "Oh, I feel it" is sung by the lead soprano, Pamina during the Act 2, Scene 4 (The Aria Database ).
Pamina is a beautiful, courageous, goodhearted and loyal princess (Mount Dela) that falls in love with Prince Tamino and is deeply saddened by the fact that Tamino is not talking to her. Tamino however, was under a silence vow, demanded of him by the Priests of the temple of Isis and Osiris (The Aria Database ).
Her aria is one of the saddest forms of music ever written in opera and even though it appears to be pretty simple, it actually is not. The accompaniment is not fully supporting the voice, therefore the singer feels vulnerable. In addition, Mozart has composed some very long phrases which require a very good breath control in order to be able to perform them as written (Aria Guides).
Pamina is attracted by Prince Tamino's playing of the Magic Flute but when she meets him, he refuses to talk to here. Little does she know that Prince Tamino has been instructed by the priests of the temple of Isis and Osiris, to remain silent. As a result, Pamina expresses her sorrow through the aria Ach, ich fühls" (The Aria Database ).
The arias libretto is translated as follows: (The Aria Database )
Ach, ich fühl's, es ist verschwunden
Ewig hin der Liebe Glück!
Nimmer kommt ihr Wonnestunde
Meinem herzen mehr zurück!
Sieh, Tamino, diess Träunen
flieβen Trauter, dir allein!il
Fühlst du nicht der Liebe Sehnen,
So wird Ruh' im Tode sein!
Ah, I feel it, it has disappeared
Forever gone lovers, happiness
Nevermore will come the hour of bliss
Back to my heart!
See, Tamino, these tears,
Flowing, beloved, for you alone!
If you don't feel the longing of love
Then there will be peace in death!
