Prince Tamino is fighting a dragon in an unknown land. He loses his senses and the Queen of Night’s three Ladies save him. Once Tamino wakes up, he sees Papageno who tells him that he saved him from the dragon.

The three ladies tell Papageno to admit that he did not save Tamino and that they did. Once Papageno admits it, the three ladies give the Queen of the Night's daughter portrait, to Tamino. They ask him to save her from Sarastro's captivity. Tamino falls in love with the princess and promises to save Pamina. The Queen of the Night appears then and hands Tamino a magic flute and Papageno the magic bells to help them through their adventure. In addition, the Queen of the Night's three spirits will guide them.

Prince Tamino and Papageno arrive at Sarastro's temple. Papageno finds Pamina being pursued by Monostatos (Sarastro's slave) and Monostatos runs away when he sees Papageno. Papageno explains to Pamina their plan of rescue while Prince Tamino has entered the temple and meets Sarastro.

Sarastro explains to Prince Tamino that the Queen of the Night is evil and asks both him and Papageno to remain at the temple and learn their society's secret by going through some trials.

Papageno and Pamina meet with Prince Tamino and they both (Tamino and Pamina) fall in love instantly.

ACT 2

Prince Tamino and Papageno's trials begin at the temple of Osis and Osiris. In the meantime the Queen of the Night meets Pamina and asks her to kill Sarastro, since her father promised the Queen of the Night the temple, which he eventually has given to Sarastro after his death. Monostatos overhears the conversation and informs Sarastro about the Queen of the Night's plan. However, Sarastro talks to Pamina and he calms her distress.

Prince Tamino and Papageno overcome their first trial and for their second trial they have to be silent in front of women. Papageno, who really wants to find a wife, only agrees if the priests present him a wife. They do so, but they present to him an old lady. Papageno, as disappointed as he was, agrees to marry the old lady, who transforms into a beautiful Papagena. However, the priests take the lady away from him, as he is not ready yet to have her as a wife.

Pamina finds Tamino and is heartbroken since Tamino is not talking to her. However, she follows him and when he undergoes his third trial he helps him go through it together.

Since both Tamino and Papageno overcome the trials, they are able to be with the women they love. Even when the Queen of the Night tries to overtake the Temple from Sarastro, the light prevents them from doing so and they all celebrate the light, wisdom and beauty.
